The Hall Center, in partnership with the Kansas City Public Library, announces the second annual series of talks under the general title Whatever Happened To?? Speakers will address subjects or ideas that seemed vital to the 20th century, but are now struggling to stay the course. For the exact spin each speaker gives to the question, you will simply have to attend the talks.

Writing in their famous Harvard Law Review article of 1890, Louis Brandeis and Samuel Warren asserted what many considered to be one of the most cherished of American values: the ?right to be let alone.? Yet today it seems that personal privacy is under siege. In his talk Professor William Staples will highlight new threats to privacy that have arisen in the face rapid technological change, competing political and social demands, an intrusive mass media, and the peculiar confessional and voyeuristic tendencies of postmodern culture. Issues concerning the contemporary blurring of boundaries between notions of ?public? and ?private? will be presented, and hopefully debated, in a lively and entertaining exchange.

Bill Staples grew up on the south shore of Long Island, New York. He has been a commercial fisherman, taxi cab driver, plumber's apprentice, and pizza chef. He studied sociology at the University of Oregon, went on to receive his PhD from the University of Southern California, and spent two years as Postdoctoral fellow at UCLA. He is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at the University of Kansas. He is the author of several books including Everyday Surveillance: Vigilance and Visibility in Postmodern Life (2000).

This event is free and open to the public.
