V Conference on Latin American Theatre

V Conference on Latin American Theatre

Wed., Apr. 2, 2003, 12:00am
From April 2-6, 2003, the University of Kansas will host the V Conference on Latin American Theatre, organized by the Department of Spanish and Portugese with the collaboration and assistance of several other units on campus.

The 2003 conference will emphasize theatre from the Caribbean, and Hall Center funds will assist in bringing several participants with theatre expertise in Puerto Rico, Cuba and US Latino theatre.

The keynote speaker will be Luis Rafael Sanchez, distinguished playwright and novelist from Puerto Rico, author of the engaging novel La guaracha del macho Camacho and such plays as La pasion segun Antiona Perez and Quintuples. The conference will attract more than 125 academic speakers on a full range of Latin American theatre topics from across the United States and from several other countries, including Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, Spain and Germany.

On Thursday and Friday afternoons (April 3-4), special programs involving playwrights, directors, critics and academics in an intense discussion of theatre in Puerto Rico and Cuba will be held at the Spring Hill Suites in the RiverFront Mall. These sessions are open to the general public. Late afternoon and evening performances of Latin American plays, both in Spanish and English, will be available at the Lawrence Arts Center and Liberty Hall for a nominal charge.
