The Spencer Museum of Art: Presepio
New Generation Society of Lawrence (NGSL members only)

Thu., Dec. 5, 2013, 4:15pm - 5:30pm
Location: Spencer Museum of Art

In 1914, Sallie Casey Thayer acquired Prince Fabrizio Massimo of Rome's extensive collection of figures and their architectural setting for a presepio, or nativity scene.  The historic collection had originally belonged to Charles III and had been displayed in 1911 at the Castel Saint Angelo in Rome.  Mrs. Thayer expanded her collection of presepio figures in Rome and Venice  and subsequently donated them all to the University of Kansas as part of her gift of some 7,000 or more works of art  to KU.  The presepio is displayed each December at the Museum and is an amazing example of such a nativity scene.  We will have an opportunity to view this and learn more about the creating of a presepio in the 17th and 18th centuries.
