This trip will consist of a full day of William Allen White activities in Emporia with five different venues at four locations.
Tour the William Allen White Home, which was built in 1885, and is considered one of the most recent acquisitions of the Kansas Historical Society. Guests of the Whites in this home consisted of many influential people, including six Presidents and a myriad of national personalities, elected officials and opinion makers.
Hear from the descendants of White who are the current owners and publishers of The Emporia Gazette. See the Gazette museum and its offices and talk with Chris White Walker, the great grandson of White and current Editor and Publisher of the Gazette. We also will hear from Chris? mother, Barbara White Walker, Senior Editor. (She was the girl featured in the book written by her father, W. L. White, and later made into the movie, Journey for Margaret.)
Our special traveling guest will be Del Brinkman, past Dean of the William Allen White School of Journalism at KU and a White historian. He will talk to us on the bus and then give a formal talk to our group after lunch in the Veterans Hall of Honor at ESU. Kay Schallenkamp, President of Emporia State University is expected to join us for lunch and for Del?s talk.
We will then bus to the Anderson Memorial Library on the old College of Emporia campus, now owned by Emporia State University. Fred Krebs, highly regarded portrayer of famous men, will give us his interpretation of WAW. Then, Sam Dicks, retired historian from ESU and now associated with the Library, will give us an interesting discussion on the connection between Lawrence and Emporia in the early days, especially as it pertains to higher education and more WAW stories.
Dinner will be at the Emporia Country Club. Menu choices will be provided before the trip. We will return to the Lied Center parking lot at 8:30 p.m.
