Spencer Museum:  The Vogel Collection
New Generation Society of Lawrence (NGSL members only)

Thu., Apr. 14, 2011, 4:00pm - 5:30pm
Location: Spencer Museum of Art

The Spencer Museum was the recipient of a gift from the Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection:  50 works for 50 states, which distributed 2,500 pieces of art to institutions around the country. The Spencer Museum of Art received the 50 works for the State of Kansas that will go on exhibit for the first time the end of March 2011. New Generation members will be among the first to tour this extraordinary collection with Curator Susan Earle. The story of Dorothy, a librarian at the Brooklyn Public Library and Herb, a postal worker in New York, was the subject of a PBS special 3 or 4 years ago.  They lived on Dorothy's salary and used Herb's to buy modern art, and in their 30 years of collecting, the tiny one bedroom apartment in which they lived was filled with art - on the walls, furniture, under the furniture, under the bed, in the kitchen, wherever they could find the space.  The bulk of their collection was given to the National Museum of Art in Washington, D.C.
