Raj Bhala is the Rice Distinguished Professor at the University of Kansas School of Law, where he teaches courses in Islamic Law (Shari?'a), International Trade Law, and Advanced International Trade Law. He is most recently the author of Understanding Islamic Law (Shari?'a) (LexisNexis, 1st ed., 2011), a major textbook for students and treatise for practitioners. In this lecture, Bhala will discuss the inseparability of law and religion, the distinction between a sacred and secular legal system, and the importance of delineating authentic from inauthentic Islamic legal doctrines. He will also discuss what his book teaches us about the American Empire and its future engagement with the Islamic world.
Bhala is the author of five books and over three dozen articles on international trade law, plus five books and 15 articles on international banking law. Before entering the legal academy, Raj was an attorney on Wall Street with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The University of Kansas awarded him the Kemper Award for Teaching Excellence in 2008.
