Location: 1000 E. 11th Street

Just Food is the food bank in Douglas County, supplying more than 40 partner agencies with food donated from food drives. It also provides access to frozen meat, fresh produce and bread.  In addition Just Food provides direct service to clients:  it operates a food pantry and participates in cooking and nutrition classes for low-income residents.  Just Food and its partners play a key role in fighting hunger in our community by increasing the availability of a variety of foods, while helping to reduce waste and discarded food. Their Mission is to improve health and well-being by providing access to nutritious food and collaborating with community partners on programs that empower self-sufficiency.

Just Food began in the hearts of a few Lawrence community veterans who saw that a growing number of Douglas County residents were food insecure.  They wanted to make a difference in the community by eradicating hunger. They wanted to set up a Douglas County food bank that is a centralized hub of food distribution that would help all of the safety net and service agencies in the county that supply food to food insecure individuals. The original mission focused on having one place in the county for all of the food to come in and then go out to agencies. In 2008 the Economic Recovery Act passed and funds became available.  The East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corporation (ECKAN, a Community Action Agency), decided to infuse $250,000 worth of start up funding into Just Food Through the help of ECKAN, Just Food  opened up its doors in September 2009, serving 700 people a month and partnering with two agencies to fight hunger in Douglas County. Today, Just Food and its 35+ partner agencies feed more than 8,000 people per month in Douglas County.
