Quantrill's Raid Walk (Without the Walk)
New Generation Society of Lawrence (NGSL members only)
Fri., Jan. 10, 2014, 10:00am - 11:00am
Location: Watkins Community Museum, 1047 Massachusetts
On Friday, August 21, 1863 William Clarke Quantrill and approximately 300 raiders invaded Lawrence, killing about 200 men and boys. To commemorate that historic event, the staff of Watkins Community Museum has created a permanent exhibit, opened to the public in August 2013, one hundred fifty years after the massacre. A walk was developed to take participants past some of the historic locations of events that occurred that day. This slide presentation will describe the sites and stories along the walk. Following the talk, attendees may view this new permanent exhibit.
Jerry Niebaum has led 4 walks along a 1.5 mile route that passes several historic sites. He is a former board member of the Douglas County Historical Society and served as its president for one year. He was inspired by similar walks he has taken, led by local historian Katie Armitage. He created this slide presentation alternative based on a walking route he originated in 2013. To date he has led about 100 people on this walk.
