National Endowment for the Humanities Regional Proposal Development Workshop for Research Fellowships

The Hall Center for the Humanities is pleased to announce a Regional NEH Proposal Development Workshop for Research Fellowships on January 13-14, 2003. This event is made possible by the generous support of the Office of the President of the KU Center for Research.

Dr. Kenneth Kolson, Deputy Director of the NEH Division of Research Programs, will present the workshop. He will also offer individual advising sessions to participants who submit concept papers in advance of the workshop.

The two-day event will take place in the Bruckmiller Room at the Adams Alumni Center at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

The morning session from 8:30 to 11:45 a.m. will include:

Overview of the grant programs supported by NEH;
Panel discussion and mock review of several NEH applications sent to pre-registered participants in advance;
Discussion of the proposal review process, using the morning panel discussion and mock review session as a platform.

The afternoon session from 1:30 ?5:00 p.m. will include:

Individual Review Sessions with Dr. Kolson.

Monday afternoon and Tuesday will be allocated to 20-minute-long individual review sessions with Dr. Kolson.

PRE-REGISTRATION DEADLINE: December 2, 5:00 p.m.

Registration is required. A continental breakfast will be served on Monday (8:00 ? 8:20 a.m.), and lunch on Monday (12:00 ? 1:00 p.m.). Although registration the day of the workshop is permitted, pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

CONCEPT PAPER DEADLINE: December 9, 5:00 p.m.

If you wish to schedule an appointment with Dr. Kolson, you must submit your concept paper via email attachment to Kathy Porsch, Humanities Grant Development Officer, at kporsch@ku.edu by 5:00 p.m. on December 9.

Concept papers may be single-spaced and no more than 3 pages in length. We will contact you via email to schedule your review session based on the preferred times you list on the registration form (available in the right hand column under related material.

Your concept paper should address the following questions:

a) What are the basic ideas, problems, works, or questions the study will examine? What is the planned approach or line of thought? If the area is new to you, what are your reasons for working in it?

b) Is the project in the beginning stages or well under way? What is the proposed schedule or plan of work that you will follow during the grant.

c) What contribution is the project likely to make to the humanities? Especially in cases where the subject of the study might appear narrow or obscure, what is the project's larger significance?

d) How will the project complement, challenge, or expand relevant studies in the field? What is distinctive about the study?

e) For what audience are the results of the study intended? What kind of ?product? is planned?

f) What is the relationship of the project to your long-range development as an interpreter of the humanities?

You can also subscribe to the NEH Outlook, an electronic newsletter, and access the abstracts of currently funded projects.

The NEH workshop is open to humanities scholars from surrounding states.
