Wed., Apr. 6, 2011, 3:00pm - 4:30pm
Location: Lawrence Country Club, 400 Country Club Drive

The KU EcoHawks are a student group led by Assistant Professor Chris Depcik. Depcik has contributed to a number of projects with the KU Energy Council. EcoHawks are dedicated to developing the leading technology in alternative and renewable energy sources. The group is part of a course in the Mechanical Engineering Department for a senior design project that would give graduating engineers the tools in great demand by companies that are building eco-friendly, high efficiency vehicles.  The goal of the EcoHawks is to design a series of hybrid fuel neutral vehicles capable of 500 mpg and to construct an operational prototype to test theoretical models under real-world driving conditions.  To date, they have converted a 1974 VW Beetle to a plug-in series hybrid that can be recharged using a 100% used cooking oil bio-diesel generator or from the student-built solar energy filling station.  They are now converting a GMC Jimmy into a modern Electric Vehicle with wind energy incorporation.  Two students will make an audio/visual presentation of this program.
