Bert Nash and Mental Health First Aid
New Generation Society of Lawrence (NGSL members only)

Wed., Sep. 5, 2012, 9:30am - 10:30am
Location: Bert Nash Center, 200 Maine Street

Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center has been an important part of the Lawrence Douglas County community for more than 60 years.  It has been an innovative and important center – one of the first to recognize the need for an endowment to help support the center and now one of the very first centers in the country to offer Mental Health First Aid.  The program is over 3 years old and has trained hundreds in the community to identify and help those with mental health concerns. It is estimated that one in four Americans will have a diagnosable mental disorder at some point in their lives and it is extremely likely that we will encounter others who are experiencing distress or facing mental health challenges.  Among those who have been trained in this process have been members of the Bert Nash governing and endowment boards, staffs of several churches, members of Leadership Lawrence, and members of the Lawrence Police Force.  We will have a member of the Bert Nash staff tell us about this important service to the community – among the many that Bert Nash offers.
