Squat round-carinated body on sharply defined offset base; shallowly concave discus with finely incised line defining it on ext, pairs of similar incised lines on body at mid-nozzle & at base of nozzle. Opposite nozzle on shoulder horizontal volute handle. Coated on exterior with glossy red slip which darkened at edge of nozzle. Scratched in base uppercase Alpha, Gamma, Iota.

Handleless reservoir with almost straight sides rising from carination just above ring base; almost flat discus with large fill hole surrounded by two raised ridges of metal prototype; dolphin lug at one side. Sides, discus, nozzle & dolphin coated with now dull, dark metallic paint which also on parts of int & base.

Sharply carinated reservoir with flat discus with fairly small fill hole surrounded by two raised ridges, bipartite high loop handle fr carination to edge of discus, nozzle with large circular wick hole. Shoulder decorated w relief band of ivy leaves & surface of nozzle with ax tied with ribbon. Now all dark gray, ?paint and/or firing.

Squat, well-rounded reservoir on low ring base with flat discus with broad raised band around fill hole, narrower & higher band at edge, leaf-shaped lugs with traces of relief decoration, small loop handle & squat nozzle. Relief decoration on rim band of large outline ivy leaves separated by small round clusters of grapes & at base of nozzle satyr head. All of ext coated with now dark paint.

Handleless, carinated reservoir on low raised base; large fill hole with torus moulding border from which lines radiate out to carination; large palmette from torus over nozzle surface; incipient lugs, with relief ?eyes at carination on either side of base of nozzle. Probably originally painted all over ext.

High, almost straight-sided reservoir tapering in slightly to slightly concave base which encircled with three raised bands; flat discus with two low ridges in central portion surrounded by flat rim, bordered by two raised bands & decorated with leaf-and-dart , sloping up to reservoir edge. Vertical loop handle on which large leaf-shaped sheath decorated with central vertical ribs and side ribs divided into groups by loop/eye-shaped elements. Spathate nozzle with small volutes on either side of base; air slit on surface of base of nozzle surrounded by raised leaf-outline; now indistinct raised element at edge of nozzle hole, end of which darkened from flame. Originally coated with brownish paint.

Flat discus with broad rim sloping to reservoir edge which decorated with line of small open Vs between raised borders Broad segmented vertical loop handle rising above reservoir rim. Coated all over with paint mottled red & brown.

Convex-sided reservoir curving sharply to deeply concave discus which decorated with multi-petaled rosette with plain rim around crudely punched filling hole near which shallow depression; shallowly concave base with 2 concentric incised lines defining edge and ? very lightly incised X V in center; short rounded nozzle and high swinging loop handle which has incised line down center toward discus but is crudely punched on back surface, incised lines making V at contact of handle with reservoir. Completely coated with mottled dark paint.

Low convex reservoir with asymmetrically concave discus rising at rear to horizontal loop handle; very shallowly convex base and short broad, spathate nozzle. On discus incised wishbone around fill hole, shaft of which stretching onto nozzle with four short incised lines, two on either side, with incised line below. Unpainted with patches of brown , perhaps discoloration; blackened at edge of nozzle.

Handleless low, convex-sided reservoir rising to sharply articulated edge of discus which has broad convex rim around concave discus which defined by narrow raised rim; outer rim of discus decorated with on opposite sides single relief bowknot with pendant triangle & double volutes at either side of base of nozzle. Base flat with shallow central depression and raised band at edge; short rounded nozzle. Coated all over in brownish paint.

Convex-sided reservoir on very low raised base, flat with relief Greek cross in center; concave discus divided into 3 parts: narrow flat rim divided by incised line from narrow insloping surface; broad band with relief strigillate decoration, central section defined by three concentric raised lines around plain central surface with fill hole. Vertical loop handle with crescentic sheath which decorated with raised lines following exterior contours. Long nozzle decorated on either side by opposing volutes; air hole at juncture of discus & nozzle. Coated all over with orangish-red slip.

Completely coated with orangish-red slip.

Vertical loop handle with ribbed surface, volute-shaped lugs on either side of reservoir, short rounded nozzle. Flat base with two encircling incisions; in center CLOLDIA. Coated all over in reddish-orange slip.

Convex-sided reservoir rising to sharp edge with broad convex rim in which small annular depressions on either side of nozzle; large shallowly concave discus with off center fill hole decorated with winged Victory in chiton & himation which twisted around r arm, holding shield in outstretched r hand & ?staff in crook of bent l arm, faint articulation of drapery folds & wing feathers, clearer articulation of hair. Vertical loop handle with ridged surface & short rounded nozzle. Base surface very shallowly convex with across center line short incised lines. Coated all over with reddish-orange slip.

Handleless lamp with convex sides & discus with concave center decorated w strigillate design with rim of two pairs of concentric relief bands separated by narrow plain band, the outer band wider than others; very short broad rounded nozzle; possible tiny airhole at edge of discus behind nozzle; shallowly concave base defined by incised line at outer edge. Coated all over with reddish glaze-paint.

Tall reservoir with very shallowly convex sides which are sharply articulated with rim around discus which is defined by raised edge of metal prototype which continues onto nozzle & opening to semicircle around wick hole; air hole in base of nozzle. Three small lugs horizontally pierced for suspension on either side of base of nozzle & opposite nozzle. On base raised FORTIS surrounded by 3 incised rings. Some darkening on end of nozzle.

Shoulder decorated with four concentric rows of close-set raised dots. Originally coated with darkish paint. Nozzle darkened.

Slipper-type lamp made in Coptic Egypt. Low, sharply carinated reservoir on small ring base, within which potters mark composed of two dots at periphery of circle-enclosed dot; vertical loop handle of elliptical section fr just under carination to edge of discus. Around discus & opening toward nozzle two thick raised bands within which around fill hole stylized leaf pattern; on shoulder in Greek capitals AGIOS THEODOROS (St Theodore). Crudely made. Originally covered in red paint. Slight darkening at nozzle.

On shoulder stylized vine in relief with volute device on base of nozzle. Coated with red paint. Some darkening of nozzle.

Convex-sided reservoir on ring base, sharp articulation with flat edge around concave , double perforated discus defined by two raised bands, inner continuing onto top of nozzle; ?horizontally pierced vertical lug handle from top to base; somewhat elongated, round-ended nozzle. Edge around top defined by two raised bands within which in relief alternating multiple triangles & half-ovals with single dot on either side of nozzle; in discus large relief CHI-RHO formed of hollow lines filled with a row of small dots; 2 fingernail impressions at base of symbol on nozzle. On very shallowly convex surface of center of ring base two incised concentric circles over which scratched Greek cross. Burnished surface. Nozzle darkened.

Four-stepped base articulated on front & sides supporting tall rounded rectangular stand to which attached miniature lamp. On rounded front surface of lower 2/3 of stand in relief: pole, entwined with snake below, & flanked by two shields supporting set of armor & peaked helmet with squarish banners on pikes extending from behind shoulders; on upper 1/3 narrow raised band with short diagonal impressions above which recessed plain surface with 8 impressed dots, 4 in lozenge-configuration at center, one at each corner. Lamp with asymmetrically biconvex reservoir with horizontally perforated loop handle & short, broad rounded spout; one thick, one narrow raised edge around small concave discus; impressed ovolo pattern on shoulder. Coated with red paint.

Convex-sided reservoir on ring base carinated just below sharp articulation with large, shallowly concave discus which ringed with 2 raised bands within which 6 palm branches, alternating broad & slender, radiate from fill hole, with small annular depressions between every pair. Broad spathate nozzle with three of same rings at base; lugs shaped like cat ears with depression in ears & forehead on either side of reservoir; broad tri-partite vertical loop handle from shoulder to rim. On flat surface within ring base 5 annular depressions in Greek cross formation. Coated all over with red glaze, except for small section of surface within handle. Some darkening on end of nozzle & top of handle.

Convex biconical reservoir on flat base with short broad concave cylindrical neck with plain rim; vertical loop handle, but with solid center in form of coil, from just above carination to top of neck; long pointed nozzles projecting diagonally in opposite directions from lower body opposite handle. Upper half & most of int coated with green glaze. Slight darkening at tips of nozzles.

N.258: TC Zeus Lamp Finial from ? (2nd c CE)

Mouldmade finial, with bust of Zeus apparently rising from floral element visible at back as large leaf which at sides finished as shallowly concave surfaces on side of bust. Head of Zeus surrounded by curly hair & beard with eyes under prominent brows, nose & mouth articulated; at back, merges into back of second smaller head with long hair bound by fillet, crown strands & curls indicated by incision (?Ganymede). Zeus in chiton which falls in front in V-shaped folds, vertical from r shoulder, with swath of himation coming from rear over l shoulder; ?floral element in center of chest. Completely coated in red paint.

Low convex-sided reservoir with broad, ?plain rim separated from small convex discus by two concentric incised lines; off-center fill hole surrounded by relief crescent moon on ring-shaped base; short rounded nozzle at base on either side incised line & small incised annulus. High, horizontally pierced vertical handle from base edge to edge of discus. Flat base defined by single incised line within which off-center short raised line, tapered at both ends. Some irregularities, such as depressions in handle and on base, which appear to be pre-firing. Coated all over with reddish paint; darkening on nozzle.

Triangular handle ornament decorated with relief 7-petaled palmette rising from floral base in 2 parts: small lotiform device at base of palmette from which leafy scrolls extend out to near edges. Originally painted all over exterior with paint extending onto back.

Convex-sided reservoir with sharp articulation with broad, plain rim separated by two raised bands, outer broader than inner, from plain, concave discus; broad rounded nozzle with base end articulated from rim; high, horizontally perforated vertical loop handle from edge of base to edge of discus, decorated with 2 incised lines down surface and on one side raised slender, vertical snakelike line. Ca. flat base defined by incised line and variously marked: across center incised -- -- -- M E R ?C/E, below which incised X and above which near edge thin curving raised device, ?swordlike. Coated all over with dark metallic paint.

Fat leaf-shaped finial with two deep incised lines from base to tip attached to horizontally perforated, vertical loop handle. On back on either side of handle relief potter's marks: V and reverse P. Coated all over with dark paint, which owing to position in kiln, what looks like dark dot in center of one half of front surface in area mottled light in firing.

On top broad, flat rim defined by two incised line, which converge toward handle and nozzle, where inner line continues onto surface of nozzle; between incised lines short incised dashes; in concave discus relief cross with relief dot above left arm; two fill holes in upper l and lower r quadrants of cross. Central portion of base defined by incised loop, open at base of handle where incised line placed between ends of loop; within loop incised spreading-barred M. Coated all over with dark paint. Darkened on nozzle.

Slipper lamp with squarish upturned vertical lug handle decorated with three narrow, vertical relief bands. Carinated reservoir with flattened carination; large fill hole defined by three narrow concentric relief bands, from outermost of which extend over surface to carination narrow, relief bands; relief cross on nozzle with relief dot in each quadrant and oval relief band on nozzle encircling lower half. Irregularly flat base defined by relief annulus. Top surface & carination and handle front & handle front & back coated with red paint. Darkening around nozzle.

Handleless, low convex reservoir with sharp articulation with broad rim which decorated with row of relief annuli within each of which relief dot and separated from concave discus by relief band; traces of relief figure in discus; short rounded nozzle at base of which on rim 3 relief dots. Irregularly flat base defined by 2 concentric incised lines. Coated all over with red paint; darkened nozzle.

Slipper lamp with upturned solid rectangular lug handle, edges of which defined by relief band within which relief X below, relief rosette above. Carinated reservoir with flattened carination, large fill hole surrounded by two relief bands; on upper surface decoration of open V's pointing toward carination within and between which relief dots; relief Greek cross on nozzle. Ca flat base depressed within poorly articulated raised band; possible mark at edge of band two indistinct depressions. Top surface coated with red paint, some of which dripped to underside; blackened nozzle.

Lamp with small handle and long nozzle with large triangular end. Sharply carinated reservoir on low offset base, slightly concave within; high sloping rim around discus within which surface rises to fill hole, two air holes approximately on longitudinal axis; low raised base w slightly concave surface. Upper surface of body decorated with relief basketry pattern: vertical rows of close-set horizontal lines; raised spathate device on surface of nozzle flanked by groups of relief dots and some relief device on tip.

Convex-bodied reservoir on very low, shallowly convex offset base with plain, fairly narrow convex rim around concave discus which defined on exterior by two relief band within which relief multi-petaled rosette. High-swinging, horizontally pierced vertical loop handle from edge of discus to upper reservoir body decorated with two incised line down outer surface; short rounded nozzle set off from rim by single incised line. Possibly originally coated with dark paint, but badly incrusted; darkened around nozzle.

High, shallowly convex reservoir curving in more strongly at top to sharp articulation with fairly narrow, flat rim, plain except for incised annulus on either side of base of nozzle; deeply concave discus defined by two incised lines; flat base, slightly depressed in center defined by deeply incised line. High, horizontally pierced vertical loop handle decorated with two incised lines down exterior surface from rim of discus to upper reservoir; short rounded nozzle recessed from rim surface from which it separated by strongly incised line. Unpainted.

Fairly tall convex reservoir with sharp articulation with broad, plain, upsloping convex rim set off by 3 incised lines around concave discus with relief decoration, ?Nike with shields in front of her; low offset base with broad indentation across center. Horizontally perforated vertical loop handle fr lower ledge of rim to upper reservoir body, affixed to front of which tall crescent on squarish base. Broad rounded nozzle with single volutes flanking base on either side; small air hole on top of base of nozzle. Unpainted; some darkening on nozzle.

Lamp of Thracian type with biconical reservoir with fairly sharp carination; concave discus defined by 2 prominent ridges which continue, merging into 1, around outside of broad, elongated nozzle; in discus outline relief decoration: heart-shaped device pointing to nozzle with 3 curving relief lines below fill hole, loop on either side above fill hole; flat base recessed within crude raised band. Uptilted thick, unperforated lug handle decorated with 2 deep grooves down the surface. Unpainted.
