Unclassified Senate Meeting
July, 2005

  1. Welcome and Introductions
    1. Recognition of previous Presidents in attendance
  2. Reports - none to speak of since we are now Unclassified Senate and not UPSA
  3. Choosing Unclassified Senate committee chairs and officers
    1. Discussion about each position/committee
      1. Thelma Simons suggested that those interested in a committee could volunteer and then amongst themselves determine a committee chair for the monthly meetings.
    2. President-Elect
      1. Nominations included John Augusto, Jason O'Connor and Danny Kaiser. Danny and John withdrew.
      2. Jason O'Connor is the new President-Elect
    3. Secretary
      1. Nominations included Aaron Brown, Sheri Perry, Jennifer Brooks, and Ray Hummert. All withdrew except Jennifer.
      2. Jennifer Brooks is the new Secretary.
    4. Treasurer
      1. Ray Hummert, previous Treasurer, gave a description of the duties including the budget of $2700 and previous expenditures and who the position works with.
      2. Nominations included Paul Farran and Karla Williams. Paul withdrew.
      3. Karla Williams is the new Treasurer.
    5. Committees
      1. Volunteers were taken for each committee and one person from each pool of volunteers was selected to convene the first meeting from which the committee chair would be selected.
      2. Mark Nesbitt-Daly recorded names for each committee pool
      3. Jeannette Johnson requested that an email be sent out with everybody's committee choice.
      4. Meeting conveners

        3. Sheri Perry - Governance
        4. Aaron Brown/Rick Whitmore (and Thelma Simons) - Ad Hoc
  4. Charges - are roughly constituted
    1. Jeannette Johnson stated that committees are free to come back to the executive group to make recommendations on standing charges, whether to add or subtract to responsibilities. Then the executive committee can review.
  5. Calendars
    1. Executive Board meets monthly starting August 11 th
    2. The second Thursday each month from 12-1:30PM
      1. Meeting locations - suggestions for rooms with a layout that everybody can see each other for meetings such as at the Union
      2. Thelma suggested rotating through many of KU's unique buildings such as the Dole Institute, etc. There are many nice places.
    3. All Senators will meet twice per semester
      1. September 8
        1. Committee chairs must be selected by the September meeting.
      2. November 10
      3. February 9
      4. April 13
  6. Email distribution list (Thelma Simons)
      1. There is an exclusive distribution list set up for senators to send email to for the whole senate.

  7. Disciplinary Action Board (Jeannette Johnson)
      1. Now that Classified employees have become University Support Staff, new procedures for grievances are in place. Previously appeals went to the State Civil Service Board, but this avenue is no longer available.
      2. It has been replaced with a Campus Board that is currently drafting guidelines parallel to the state board.
      3. 5 member board hears appeals
        1. made up of 3 University Support Staff, 1 Unclassified Staff and 1 Faculty
        2. Nominations go to the Provost for governance of this Board and he makes the appointments
        3. There needs to be at least one set of alternates for each position
        4. The Provost wants 4 names for our group quickly
      4. The number of cases last year: 6 to the State Civil Service Board
        1. Volunteers
          1. Angie Loving, Mike Irvin, Dawnelle Prince, Jeannette Johnson, Susan Teague, Dee Steinle
  8. University Support Staff Representative for their Monthly meetings
    1. 2 nd Wednesday of every month
    2. Angie Loving volunteered for this
  9. The meeting concluded with recognizing Dan Consolver for his service as President during the previous term.
