Desired investment from the State of Kansas

To be successful in gaining NCI-designation, ongoing, dedicated support from the State of Kansas is crucial. This type of commitment at the State-level will demonstrate the requisite investment needed to ensure long-term success for a Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Kansas.

Like other states who have been successful in securing NCI designation for their cancer centers, Kansas will be required to invest in this initiative. The benefits are clear, and the University of Kansas and the community have confirmed this is our top priority. The goal is ambitious, but the quest to end suffering and death from cancer is worthy of our best efforts in Kansas. The investment of state dollars now will help leverage additional vital investments from other sources both public and private. These resources when targeted as part of a cohesive and focused plan will forever change our State and region. Together, in a partnership for life, we will enhance human health by discovering and delivering breakthrough therapies, and in doing so contribute to expanded economic opportunity for those who call the Heartland home.
"My dream for this medical center, for this community and for our State is to provide this region with the comprehensive cancer center its citizens deserve.... My dream for Kansas is nothing short of ending suffering and death from cancer....Within our grasp are the tools and talent necessary to transform what the cancer patients of this region think of when they hear the word, 'cancer'.... It is the University's number one priority."

Summary
NCI-designation will place the KU Cancer Center among an elite group of 61 U.S. cancer centers. This designation will enable far superior cancer research and care for Kansans, and catapult the Kansas City region ahead as a lifesciences center of excellence.

The KU Cancer Center is well on its way to achieving status as a nationally-recognized Comprehensive Cancer Center by building on its current strengths in cancer research and treatment to provide cutting edge therapy and research opportunities for the citizens of Kansas and the region. With the right commitment from the State and our communities, Kansas will be home to a nationally-recognized research, treatment, and education center that will benefit all Kansans as well as the entire Heartland region.
