STANDINGREPORTS
Faculty Senate President.Nancy Kinnersleyreported on activities at this week’s Board of Regents meeting. A legislativebill to allow the Regents to set admission standards will be voted on by theSenate next week.
There was much discussion at theRegents meeting and by the Faculty Senate Presidents about state budget issuesincluding state general funds, stimulus money, and tuition. Kinnersley said somestimulus funds will be used for deferred maintenance at the Regents’ schools. She explained that stimulus funds may also be used for tuition “mitigation,”which is a one-year tuition freeze forKansasresidents contingent on legislativeadoption of the Governor’s revised budget. If tuition mitigation is approved,KU’s 4-year guaranteed tuition compact plan would be jeopardized. Vice ProvostDanny Anderson added that KU is looking at ways to keep the tuition compactmodel alive but there are limitations to what the university can do.
The Regents approved KU’s requestfor aPh.D. inBioinformatics.Student BodyPresident.Adam McGonigle reported that studentswith a regular parking permit will now be allowed to park atWatkinsHospitalwithout being ticketed. McGoniglehas recommended that Student Senate not increase fees for FY10, and hearings areunderway regarding the allocation of $600,000 by Student Senate to departmentsacross campus.

AMENDMENT TO UNIVERSITY SENATERULES, ARTICLE 1.3.2
Mary Ann Baker/Liz Kowalchuck moved to approve the amendments shown inbold font below. Passed without dissent. The text isas follows:1.3.2.AComprehensive Final Examinationis defined as an examination that tests overclass content covering the entire term. A Section Examination is defined as anexamination that tests over class content covering a unit, section, topic orpart of the term, but does not cover the entire content of theclass.
Normally the lastexamination in a course - whether a comprehensive Final Examination or a SectionExam - is administered at the appointed time during the regularly scheduledfinal exam period. An exam may be given during the last week of classes ONLY ifit is a Section Exam preceding a Comprehensive Final Examination; thisComprehensive Final Examination must be administered at the appointed timeduring the regularly scheduled final exam period. If neither a SectionExamination nor a Comprehensive Final Examination is to be given, the class isnot required to meet at its appointed time during the regularly scheduled finalexamination period. If a “take-home” exam is given, the earliestdate it may be due is during the regularly scheduled final exam period for theclass.Likewise,IF AN ON-LINEEXAM IS GIVEN,the earliest required completion date andtime is DURING the regularly scheduled final exam period for the class. The above does not apply toassignments such as projects, performances, or papers. Stacy Elmer asked for feedback from Senate members on an issue beingdebated by the Student Senate. At Student Senate hearings last night on blockgrant allocations, there was much discussion between undergraduate and graduatestudents about how much money should be allocated to the Graduate&Professional Association for distribution to graduate students to travel toconferences to present papers and research. A faculty member suggested thatperhaps some professors have travel funds allocated to them that could be usedby their graduate students. Another member advised Elmer to contact the GraduateOffice about funds they might have available for graduate student travel.Elmer thanked members for theirsuggestions. No furtherbusiness.
