FacEx chair Nancy Kinnersley called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.
MINUTES for June 10 and June 12, 2008, were approved.
REPORT OF THE FACULTY SENATE PRESIDENT
Kinnersley reported that she and Mary Berry met with Vice Provosts Mary Lee Hummert and Danny Anderson last Friday to discuss various issues of mutual interest. She has been informed that Rick Levy and Dan Bernstein were misquoted in the University Daily Kansan article about learner outcomes. Rick Levy has prepared a first draft for the Task Force on the Faculty Handbook to consider and will meet with FacEx to discuss the proposed changes.
Kinnersley announced that implementation will be delayed for the FSRR amendments regarding resident credit that were recently approved by the Chancellor. Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Danny Anderson has requested that each of the deans designate which courses will be approved for independent study credit before the changes are implemented. FacEx members asked questions about “by appointment” courses and doctoral courses where the graduate student must be in residence for two semesters.
Lisa Wolf-Wendel pointed out that deadlines for add/drops for summer session courses are too close and should be extended by a week or so. She asked if the AP&P committee could be asked to look at these dates.
DEFAULT PROCEDURES FOR APPEALS OF ACADEMIC DEADLINES
Members reviewed a draft document prepared by the Registrar’s Office entitled “Processes for Deadline and Policy Exceptions” and agreed it was a useful synopsis of the various rules.
OLD BUSINESS
Scholarly Misconduct Policy. In regard to the new policy approved by the Chancellor in July, Kinnersley noted that the policy should clarify what would happen if the Faculty Rights, Privileges, and Responsibilities Committee determined that the process was flawed. Kinnersley will follow up on this point.
Red Dog Days Controversy. Lisa Wolf-Wendel updated members on the situation involving the popular community fitness group’s request to continue using Memorial stadium for its program.
Closed Meeting
Ben Eggleston moved/John Staniunas seconded, that the meeting be closed in order to discuss appointments to the Task Force on Learner Outcomes and the Tuition Advisory Committee. Passed. Molly Mulloy will contact the nominees regarding their willingness to serve. After ten minutes, Liz Kowalchuk/John Staniunas moved that the meeting return to open session. Passed.
No further business.
Respectfully submitted,
Molly Mulloy
