November 13-15, 2009Professor Detamore is being recognized during the KU basketball game as 1 of 5 Outstanding Educators at KU, awarded by the Mortar Board National Honor Society. On Sunday, November 15, 2009, Dr. Detamore will receive a certificate during a 1:30pm reception at the Mallott Room in the Kansas Union.

October 30, 2009 - The Arthritis Foundation highlights Dr. Detamore's work in advancing the knowledge of osteoarthritis, as one of the Kansas chapter members.

August 21, 2009 - We are pleased to announce that K.U.'s Institute for Advancing Medical Innovation (IAMI) has decided to fund our next in vivo study, entitled "Custom Implants for Rapid Tissue Regeneration in Osteochondral Defects," as a Proof-of-Concept project! Thanks to Nate for his work towards developing the application.

May 18, 2009 - Dr. Detamore has been selected to receive the Gould Award for Outstanding Advisor. He has been heavily involved in the creation of the student chapter of the Biomedical Engineering Society and has helped students pursue graduate study opportunities, navigate the application process and celebrate their successes.

May 17, 2009 - Dr. Detamore was selected by a faculty committee to receive the Miller Professional Development Award for Research for his exceptional progress during his first few years at KU. This award comes from the School of Engineering. Read more about the ceremony here!

May 2, 2009 – Congratulations to Milind for winning the award for Best Ph.D. Thesis in Chemical & Petroleum Engineering for the academic year 2008-2009.

May 1, 2009 – We received our 3rd R21 grant from the NIH for a project entitled “Solvent-free engineering of a shape-specific osteochondral TMJ condyle.” This project with co-Investigators Aaron Scurto, Cory Berkland and Mark Weiss, and consultants Lynda Bonewald and Lou Mercuri, is focused on the innovative approach of using dense phase CO2 to fabricate shape-specific scaffolds for TMJ tissue engineering.

April 28, 2009 - Congratulations to Brandon on being recognized by Tau Beta Pi with a Nagel scholarship.

April 26, 2009 - Brandon places 1st in the Sigma Xi Undergraduate Student Research Paper Contest.

March 9, 2009 - Dr. Detamore was officially awarded tenure and promoted to Associate Professor, effective with the 2009-2010 academic year. We are all very proud of his diligence and hard work, and look forward to the many years of excellence in teaching, researching, and mentoring he will bring to KU!

February 11, 2009 - Professor Detamore was selected to receive a CAREER Award from the NSF. The project is to advance umbilical cord stem cells and the use of gradients in musculoskeletal tissue engineering design strategies. The educational aspects of the project include the Project Discovery program for high school students and the IMSD program at KU for undergraduates. February 10, 2009 - Our group was fortunate to recieve the announcement of our second R21 grant from the NIH. The focus of this project, together with co-investigator Stevin Gehrke and collaborator Lisa Friis, is to combine two ordinary hydrogels in a novel approach to create a new material with mechanical properties superior to the two original constituents, and to test new signaling strategies in these materials. Professor Gehrke is also the PI of a funded NSF grant on this project that, together with Professor Cory Berkland and Professor Detamore, attempts to understand the underlying phenomena responsible for the drastically improved mechanical properties.

January 17, 2009 - We are pleased to announce that Dr. Detamore is being recognized as a Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation (KTEC) Scholar for our dual network hydrogel project, which is in collaboration with Dr. Gehrke.

January 9, 2009 - Congratulations to Nate on earning the award for best student presentation at the 2009 SPRBM annual meeting in Oahu, Hawaii.

November 25, 2008 - We are pleased to report that we have been selected to recieve a Research Support Grant from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation. The grant is in support of our gradient scaffold project in an in vivo TMJ tissue engineering application, together with collaborators Dr. Cory Berkland and Dr. Kamal Busaidy.

May 1, 2008 - A funded project from K-INBRE begins today to study hydrogels with remarkably high mechanical integrity for cartilage tissue engineering in collaboration with Prof. Stevin Gehrke.

May 1, 2007 - We are pleased to report that we have received NIH funding for an R21 project to explore a novel approach to engineering seamless, integrated osteochondral constructs with human umbilical cord matrix stem cells. Collaborators on this project include co-investigators Cory Berkland and Kathy Mitchell, and consultants Russ Middaugh, Lou Mercuri and Lynda Bonewald.

March 15, 2007 - The Board of Regents at the University of Kansas formally approved the Bioengineering Degree Program (M.S. and Ph.D.). The program will admit its first students for the Fall 2007 semester.

January 22, 2007 - Mark Bailey and Limin Wang together have two articles that will appear in the upcoming Special Issue of Tissue Engineering on ‘Emerging Technologies and New Basic Science Directions in Tissue Engineering’

December 5, 2006 - Milind Singh (Ph.D. student) won the 1st prize in the Graduate Engineering Association’s Poster Competition held on November 17, 2006 at KU.

May 25 - 27, 2006 - Professor Detamore is chairing the world's first TMJ Bioengineering Conference, where TMJ surgeons and TMJ patients will issue directives to bioengineers.

March 4, 2006 - Professor Detamore was invited to join the American Society of TMJ Surgeons as an Affiliate Member.

February 27, 2006 - Our group received an Arthritis Investigator Award from the Arthritis Foundation to investigate human umbilical cord stem cells for tissue engineering bone and cartilage, along with collaborators Kathy Mitchell and Lynda Bonewald at the UMKC Dental School.

May 12, 2005 - Professor Detamore was awarded the Sigma Xi Best Thesis Prize in Physical Sciences and Mathematics, University/Texas Medical Center Chapter (Rice University, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas Health Science Center, Baylor College of Medicine, April 2004 April 2005).
