Working towards a sustainable future for KU involves the entire campus community. Through research, project implementation, and sharing ideas, we can make sustainability part of every day life at the University of Kansas. Faculty, students, staff and the entire KU community all have a role to play in moving our campus forward.
Faculty
Faculty can contribute to the Center for Sustainability (CFS) through research, teaching, and leadership. Faculty can request to become an
affiliate of CFS to support the research mission of the center and receive assistance with developing collaborate research proposals. They can incorporate sustainability into existing courses or develop service learning courses with a sustainability focus. Faculty can also serve as
ambassadors, representing their academic department in a campus-wide sustainability network that promotes collaborative solutions to the environmental issues facing our campus.
Staff
Sustainable operation of the University of Kansas is largely influenced by the nearly 8,000 Unclassified Professionals, Support Staff, and student employees that provide out a wide variety of services for the University of Kansas. Staff members can serve as
ambassadors to help address environmental challenges and promote sustainable practices within their unit. They can further support the mission of CFS by helping identify opportunities for institutional research, collaboration, and consultation that will assist their department - and departments throughout campus - in moving towards a more sustainable future. This may include assisting students who are participating in research or service learning courses.
Students
The Center for Sustainability seeks to increase opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate students to participate in sustainability research and provide input in the process of making KU more sustainable. Through connections with campus faculty and staff, CFS can assist students by identifying opportunities to get involved with ongoing research, supporting student initiatives, and developing
service learning courses. Students can also serve as
ambassadors for their academic department, student organization, or living group. Outside of the Center, there are a number of
student organizations focusing on issues of sustainability.
