Clinical Interests
Prior to coming to the University of Kansas as a clinical faculty member in 1996, Ms. Gatts worked in acute care, rehabilitation, and outpatient hospital settings. At the Schiefelbusch Clinic she has expanded her interests and experience to include voice and fluency disorders.
As the clinical faculty member for the Facilitating Adult Communication Team (FACT) within the clinic her interests and applied research are in the areas of speech and language disorders that occur as a result of strokes, head injuries, or degenerative diseases. Of particular interest are the effects of functionally based intervention and group intervention that occur in natural settings for individuals with aphasia and dysarthria. Individuals that are more than 6 months post-onset of their communication disorder are making significant improvement over time in their ability to communicate in the contexts that they identify as important. One area of research interest is the individual and family perception of improvement in communication over the course of a functionally based intervention program.
