Service-learning is a credit-bearing, educational, experience in which students participate in an organized
service activity that meets identified community needs and reflect on the service activity in such a way
as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an
enhanced sense of civic responsibility.
Students should download the registration form at the website listed above and submit it to the
Center for Service Learning. The Certification in Service Learning experience outlined below includes
four components designed to demonstrate that students have met the service learning experience criteria
specified by the Working Group.
- Classroom Experience, emphasizes academic coursework that involves service learning as a method of
engaging the course material. A list of possible courses is available at the website listed above.
Note that there are no SPLH courses that fulfill this experience currently.
- Directed Readings (assigned by the Center for Service Learning), focuses on basic knowledge of the
principles of service learning and community engagement. A copy of the readings can be obtained at
the website listed above.
- Independent Project, emphasizes the application of principles of service learning to a project
initiated by the student independently. Note that the project must be approved by the Center for
Service Learning.
- Reflection, is a written piece designed to integrate the directed experiences in the classroom,
the independent experience, and the directed theoretical readings. On the completion of the final
reflection, a student will submit a portfolio of work documenting the four components of the
certification process. Specific instructions for the paper are detailed at the website listed above.
