The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate courses. While the major emphasis of the Department is literature, we also offer courses in Spanish language, linguistics, and culture, as well as Portuguese language, Brazilian literature and cultural studies. In Spring 2007, the Department received the Departmental Award for Exceptional Teaching and Learning from the Center for Teaching Excellence, University of Kansas. The Department recognizes the integral relationship between teaching and research, and all members of the faculty are both active scholars and dedicated teachers.
The Department's offices are located in 2650 Wescoe Hall on the southwest side of the building. We invite you to explore our web site and learn more about our faculty, our programs, and the various courses of study offered by the KU Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
KU Students in Santiago de Compostela watch Jayhawks' victory: Spanish majors studying in Santiago de Compostela gathered to watch on a laptop as the Jayhawks defeat Memphis. Amanda Lewis, a KU sophomore, reported: "It was so fun to celebrate the Jayhawks here. I would have loved to be in Lawrence, but Spain was the next best place! Me and my friend cooked a big tailgate meal for all the people in our group. It was really fun and we all wore our crimson and blue." Lewis is one of twenty KU students enrolled in the KU Program in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, this semester. This program offers students a semester-long opportunity to take advanced-level Spanish language, literature, and culture courses in a city of great historical and cultural significance.
