¡Welcome to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese!

Wescoe HallThe Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate courses. While the major emphasis of the Department is literature, we also offer courses in Spanish language, linguistics, and culture, as well as Portuguese language, Brazilian literature and cultural studies. In Spring 2007, the Department received the Departmental Award for Exceptional Teaching and Learning from the Center for Teaching Excellence, University of Kansas. The Department recognizes the integral relationship between teaching and research, and all members of the faculty are both active scholars and dedicated teachers.

The Department's offices are located in 2650 Wescoe Hall on the southwest side of the building. August 2009

Associate Professor Stuart A. Day awarded a W.T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence

Assistant Professor Jorge Pérez was recognized by the Center for Teaching Excellence at the 12th annual Celebration of Teaching reception, which provided graduate students an opportunity to thank a teacher who has had a significant impact on their education.

  • Last day to withdraw or drop from all Summer classes, July 21, 2009.
  • Last day of Summer Semester and FINAL exams, July 31, 2009.
  • Resume continuing Student enrollment for Fall, August 3, 2009.

  • First day of Fall Semester classes, August 20, 2009.
  • Last day to enroll on-line, August 26, 2009.
  • Last day to add/change a section with written permission, August 27, 2009.
  • Last day to drop a class on-line, September 10, 2009.
  • Nov. 5-7, 2009, Mid-America Conference on Hispanic Literature (MACHL) 2009. KU’s  Department of Spanish and Portuguese will be hosting MACHL. Topic of the conference is: Race, Religion, and Resistance. Although papers are not restricted to this topic, work related to the theme is especially encouraged. Keynote speakers so far will be Vincent Barletta (Stanford University) and Magali Carrera (U. of Mass., Dartmouth), Kirsten Nigro (University of Texas at El Paso).
