Elaine is working on her PhD in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Wales in Lampeter, where her dissertation is on the topic Why are Marian icons used for protection?. Marian icons have been venerated as palladiums, protectors of households, and spiritual protectors. She is looking at a variety of influences including theological, mariological, psychological, and sociological influences. Working under the supervision of Dr. Andreas Andreopoulos, an orthodox Christian theologian, she hopes to finish in early 2011. (12/09)

Susan S. Novak joined the staff of the Kansas State Historical Society in 1993, where she has since served as the managing editor of Kansas Heritage magazine and the associate editor of Kansas History: A Journal of the Central Plains, writing regular departments and main articles and providing photographs, book reviews, and layout and design work. In addition, she runs WordWorks, a freelance editing, writing, and layout and design service. Novak has received state and national awards for her writing and photography. She is a member of the National Federation of Press Women and serves as the treasurer of this organization's state affiliate, Kansas Press Women, and the president of the local affiliate. She has done pro bono work for the Lawrence Preservation Alliance and volunteers her time to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Douglas County, reading for the blind, and as a judge for local and state National History Day contests; she also participates regularly in fund-raising events for Breast Cancer Awareness, the Leukemia Society, and the Lawrence (Kansas) Humane Society. Emily Leonard Tock
Since leaving KU, she has lived and worked in Moscow from 1992—1995 as an office manager for a U.S. law firm. She returned to the U.S. to do an MLIS at the University of Texas-Austin. While finishing MLIS, she ran the musical score library at UT-Austin. Currently, she is the Bibliographer of East European and Slavic Studies at Ohio State University.
