Tom Huang is an Assistant Professor of Industrial Design at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. His furniture based sculpture was recently highlighted in American Craft Magazine. Huang’s work can be found at Wexler Gallery- Philadelphia, PA and Shidoni Gallery - Sant Fe, New Mexico. Prior to teaching at KU, Huang completed his graduate work earning a Master of Fine Arts Degree at the Rhode Island School of Design. In the Furniture Design Department, he studied with Rosanne Somerson, nationally recognized furniture designer and head of the Furniture Department at RISD. Huang also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis.
Huang worked in the San Francisco Bay Area design community from 1994 to 2000. At Moz Designs, a specialty fabrication company, he was a designer and project manager working with clients including Sun Microsystems, Spago Restaurants, Disney Imagineering and Sony Entertainment. He also worked with various Bay Area architects on commercial and residential projects.
Upon acceptance to RISD, Huang was named one of four Presidents Scholars, and received and Award of Excellence for his first-year graduate work. He also was awarded the Furniture Design Department’s Graduate Award of Excellence in Design in 2001.
Originally from Wilmington, Delaware, Huang attended Tatnall High School. He now lives and works in Lawrence, Kansas with his wife Shelli Ulmer, also an architect, son Cole, daughter Maya and their dog Bodhi.
