Michael Dean Eckersley

Michael Dean Eckersley has applied his fine arts education and vast skills to his expansive experience as a designer, researcher, educator and design strategist and consultant.

Before joining the University of Kansas, Eckersley was Assistant Professor, Coordinator, for the Department of Housing & Design at the University of Maryland and Assistant Professor, Chair, for the University of Minnesota Department of Design.   Eckersley then took on the role of managing partner for his own design company, Eckersley Associates, in Salt Lake City, Utah. After seven years at his own firm, Eckersley pursued work as the Director of Design Strategy and Creative Director for Sybase/Financial Fusion in Boston, and he had most recently returned to Salt Lake City to act as Principal at HumanCentered, a design research and consultation company.

Eckersley has received numerous awards for his excellence in design studies, including a Doctoral Fellowship from Ball State University, a Cortez Foundation Fellowship from Weber State University and Outstanding Student award from the College of Fine Arts at Weber State University.  

Eckersley's additional achievements include his creation of "Design Apprentice," a rule-based, procedural design software application and "NYMS," a rule-based procedural software to develop names for business and industry.   Eckersley's research and development projects have also been selected for The Smithsonian Institution.   A short list of Eckersley's diverse publications from the past few years include "Joining People & Brands," Design Management Review (2004); "Design and The Long View," Design Management Journal (2003); "Integrated Design Strategy Management: Challenges & Opportunities", DMI Viewpoints (2003).  

Eckersley remains active as a member of the Advisory Board and Research Council for the Design Management Institute in Boston.
