Sarah Smiley

 

Sarah, a 2001-2005 Self Fellow, received a Ph.D. in Geography in 2007. She received a B.A. (2000) magna cum laude in geography from the University of Cincinnati and an M.A. (2003) in geography from the University of Kansas. Her graduate research examined the differences in perspectives toward debt relief in Uganda, specifically identifying the geographic factors causing these differences. In 2005 Sarah received a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship. After graduating from KU, Sarah was an assistant professor in the Department of History and Geography at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. Since 2010 Sarah has worked as an Assistant Professor of Geography at Kent State University at Salem, Ohio. Her research interests lie in urban and cultural geography, focusing broadly on the contemporary legacies of colonial policies in Sub-Saharan Africa.
