Shannon C. DeVaney

Shannon is a 2002-2006 Self Fellow pursuing a Ph.D. is ecology and evolutionary biology. She received a B.S. (2002) in zoology with minors in chemistry and German linguistics from the University of Washington. Shannon’s dissertation research focuses on the order Stomiiformes, which comprises more than 400 species of deep-sea fishes, including bristlemouths, marine hatchetfishes, lightfishes, dragonfishes, snaggletooths, and loosejaws. Shannon studies the evolutionary interrelationships of these fishes using nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequence data. Recently, she spent two months in Japan to learn techniques for sequencing the whole mitochondrial genome. Shannon plans a career in scientific research on the biology of fishes, with particular emphasis on those that live in the deep ocean.
