Rachel L. Robson

Rachel is a 2000-2004 Self Fellow pursuing a Ph.D. in the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the KU Medical Center, Kansas City. Currently, she is researching Streptococcus pneumoniae, the leading cause of community-acquired pneumonia worldwide. Rachel is most interested in how S. pneumoniae can cause disease in some people, and live harmlessly in others. As antibiotic resistance becomes an increasingly intractable problem for modern medicine, Rachel is ultimately interested in ways of treating infectious diseases that do not kill the bacteria which cause them.

Rachel has presented her research at both local and national scientific meetings. She also discusses science with the public, through radio appearances and a regular newspaper column.

Rachel received her B.S. in biology (2000) from the University of Kansas.
