Adam A. Powell
Adam, a 1999-2003 Self Fellow, received his Ph.D. in social psychology in 2005. He received a B.A. (1989) in psychology and a M.B.A. (1990) from the University of Iowa. He then moved to Minnesota, where he conducted market research for General Mills from 1992 to 1999, generating new product ideas and evaluating the potential of these ideas with consumers. At the University of Kansas, Adam conducted research that examined the role of emotion in prosocial behavior. Adam is currently an investigator at the Veterans Administration's Center for Chronic Disease Outcomes Research (CCDOR) in Minneapolis and an Assistant Professor in the University of Minnesota Department of Medicine. Adam's work focuses on the use of social marketing principles and theories of social influence to affect provider and patient behaviors. He is also interested in fostering a more comprehensive understanding of the diverse consequences associated with quality improvement initiatives and system change. Adam is currently working closely with the VA's Office of Quality and Performance to develop strategies, tools and measurement systems that facilitate the timely adherence to evidence based practices in cancer screening and care. Adam is currently a member of the Board of Governors of the Society of Self Fellows. Mentor: C. Daniel Batson, Professor, Psychology
