| Kristin is a 2003-2007 Self Fellow
pursuing a Ph.D. in chemistry. She received a B.A. (2003) in chemistry, summa cum laude,
from William Jewell College.
Kristin's research involves the study of metabonomics. Metabonomics involves monitoring changes in the levels of endogenous small molecules in response to a perturbation like a disease or administered drug. By identifying how these perturbations change metabolic pathways, we can better understand disease, drug action, or toxicity. Currently, there are few options to conduct metabonomics studies in specific tissues. Therefore, Kristin's project involves the development of tissue targeted metabonomics using microdialysis sampling with NMR detection to locally study oxidative stress in the heart. Kristin has held internships at Boehringer Ingelheim and Phoenix Scientific. She has presented papers at national and international meetings, and presented posters at Pittcon, American Chemical Society, SMASH NMR conference, and AAPS national conferences. Kristin's long-term goal is to pursue a research
position in a pharmaceutical company, working on technologies to facilitate drug discovery.
