Julie F. Sergeant
Julie, a 2002-2006 Self Fellow, received her Ph.D. in gerontology in 2006. She received a B.A. (1984) in early childhood education from the University of Iowa and an M.S.Ed. (1992) in special education from the University of Kansas. Julie has worked with disability, injury, and public health issues, including experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (1985-87) and as Director of the Office of Injury and Disability Programs at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (1998-2002). She has been active in professional organizations, including the Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization (ESPO) of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA). Her research interests include independence and life course transitions with a focus on residential moves in later life. This work will provide strategies for approaching and experiencing late-life transitions proactively to preserve self-identity and independence. Julie has published articles and book chapters and has made numerous presentations at the state and national levels, including testimony before the Kansas State Legislature.
