Julie, a 2002-2006 Self Fellow, received her Ph.D. in gerontology in
2006. She received a B.A. (1984) in early childhood education from the
University of Iowa and an M.S.Ed. (1992) in special education from the
University of Kansas. Julie has worked with disability, injury, and
public health issues, including experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer in
the Democratic Republic of the Congo (1985-87) and as Director of the
Office of Injury and Disability Programs at the Kansas Department of
Health and Environment (1998-2002). She has been active in professional
organizations, including the Emerging Scholar and Professional
Organization (ESPO) of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA). Her
research interests include independence and life course transitions with
a focus on residential moves in later life. This work will provide
strategies for approaching and experiencing late-life transitions
proactively to preserve self-identity and independence. Julie has
published articles and book chapters and has made numerous presentations
at the state and national levels, including testimony before the Kansas
State Legislature.
Julie is currently a research associate in the Office of Aging and
Long-Term Care in the School of Social Welfare at the University of
