Joe, a 2002-2006 Self Fellow, received his Ph.D. in pharmaceutical
chemistry in 2007. He received a B.A. (2002) in chemistry and biology from Central College, Pella, Iowa, and earned the Art Bosch Award presented by the chemistry faculty. He received an M.S. (2005) in pharmaceutical chemistry with honors from the University of Kansas. (NMR) His primary research interests at KU were in the study of solid-state pharmaceutical formulations, particularly how solid-state NMR can be used to aid development of stable drug products. His work focused on correlating drug chemical stability using only NMR experiments. He has published three times in peer-reviewed journals and in one reference book, and has presented his work at national and international meetings.
While at Central, he participated in one year of intercollegiate golf, and then returned to the baseball field where he earned three consecutive varsity letters pitching for the Dutch. Joe was also active with the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the BioChem Club, for which he served as President.
Joe is currently a scientist at Genentech in San Francisco, California.
