About the Self Graduate Fellowship

The mission of the University of Kansas Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship is to identify, recruit, and provide development opportunities for exceptional Ph.D. students in the sciences, engineering, business, and economics who demonstrate the promise to make significant contributions to their fields of study and society as a whole.

Profile of a Self Fellow

Self Fellows are selected for their vision, career goals, and achievements. They are able to set and attain goals, show leadership potential and motivation, and possess a strong work ethic. Self Fellows also demonstrate initiative and passion for achievement and lifelong learning, and make a commitment to participate in the Fellow Development Program.

2010-2011 Award

We anticipate that Self Fellows for 2010-2011 will receive $25,500 each year for four years, full tuition coverage up to 84 hours, and the Fellow Development Program. The total value of the four-year doctoral fellowship exceeds $160,000. The 28 current Self Fellows are among 117 students who have benefited from the fellowship since it was established in 1989.

Benefits

The Fellow Development Program provides general education and training in communication, management, and leadership to assist Self Fellows in preparation for future leadership roles, complementing the specialized education and training provided in the Ph.D. programs. Fellows interact with nationally prominent experts to gain broad knowledge of public policy issues. A capstone of the development program is an intensive public policy seminar held in Washington, D.C.
