Amy N. Hinkelman
| Amy is a 2009-2013 Self Fellow pursuing a Ph.D. in microbiology in the molecular biosciences department. She received a B.S. (2008) in biology and graduated summa cum laude from Baylor University. While a student at Baylor, Amy was on the Academic Dean’s List every semester, worked as a tutor, was a supplemental instruction leader for general biology, and was a Residence Hall Assistant. She was active in various outreach and volunteer activities, including two months spent as a health-care and teaching volunteer in Varanasi, India, and time spent as a nursing student volunteer in Juarez, Mexico. She was also a volunteer with the Church Under the Bridge, cooking and serving food to the homeless in Waco, Texas. She was involved in research at Baylor that focused on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and also a study of pathogenic microorganisms. In the future Amy hopes to play a role in global health initiatives and the study of emerging infectious diseases. Mentor: Stephen H. Benedict, Professor, Molecular Biosciences
