The Department of Religious Studies announces the following scholarships for the academic year 2008-2009 for students majoring in religious studies. To apply, send a completed departmental scholarship & award application form, a copy of your transcript or ARTS form showing all courses completed in religious studies, a statement of in-state or out-of state tuition and fees status, and a brief letter of application to Karen Hummel, 102 Smith Hall (alt., Aagje Ashe, 109 Smith Hall). The letter of application (addressed to the department) should identify the scholarship(s) for which you are applying, explain how you meet the eligibility requirements for the various awards, and describe the program of studies you have undertaken and the progress you have made toward completion of your degree requirements. It should also outline your projected work for the coming year and note any distinctions that you have received for your academic or related work not specified in the ARTS form (e.g., departmental awards, publications, presentations, extra research projects, etc.). Recipients will be notified of their awards by June 1, 2008. Amounts of awards may vary by in-state or out-of-state tuition status.
Zelma McIlvain Scholarships
Application deadline date: February 28
Awards: Two or more scholarship of $1,000 to $5,000 each
Eligibility: Preference is for undergraduate religious studies majors, all levels; graduate students in religious studies also eligible.
St. John’s Episcopal Church Scholarships
Application deadline date: February 28
Awards: Two or more scholarships of $500 to $1,000 each
Eligibility: Religious studies majors planning to attend divinity school or pursue careers in social work; seniors and graduate students.
Starrett-Clark Scholarships
Application deadline date: February 28
Awards: Two or more scholarships of $400 to $800 each
Eligibility: Preference will be given to religious studies graduate students currently writing theses. Undergraduate majors also eligible.
Lynn Taylor Memorial Award
Application deadline date: February 28
Awards: One annually.
Eligibility: Religious Studies graduating major who shows high academic ability, recognizes the interface of religious studies with other disciplines, and demonstrates leadership and caring for others in activities within and beyond the university. The applicant is to write a letter outlining his or her academic achievements and community leadership and service. Attach this letter to the completed departmental scholarship and award application form and materials as indicated above.
