ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES: ISLAM

The Department of Religious Studies at the University of Kansas invites applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor in Religious Studies with a concentration in Islam. The appointment is expected to begin as early as August 18, 2010. The research specialization is open as to geographical region, historical period, and disciplinary approach. The candidate should have training in the academic study of Islam, with knowledge of Arabic and any other languages relevant to the specialization, knowledge of approaches and methods in the academic study of religion, and familiarity with the study of religion as pursued in a state university. Candidates must show evidence of commitment to continuing research and publication, as well as teaching excellence. University-level teaching experience preferred (which may include Teaching Assistantships). Ph.D. or ABD expected by start date of appointment.

 

Duties include full participation in the teaching, research, and service responsibilities of the Department of Religious Studies and cooperation with related programs and area studies centers throughout the University. The standard University teaching load is two, three-credit hour courses per semester. The candidate is expected to contribute to the teaching mission of the Department through regular offering of a range of undergraduate and graduate courses on Islam, and courses in theory and method of religious studies at the introductory and advanced levels. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: LECTURER POOL (Religious Studies)

The Department of Religious Studies at the University of Kansas invites qualified scholars and professionals to submit applications, which will be reviewed by the faculty and placed in a pool to be considered for part-time, temporary teaching positions as needed. Applications will be accepted throughout the year. Academic year appointments will be made in April or May of the spring semester, or at other times when extra teachers are needed to fill vacancies or emergency situations. The successful applicant should have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.

Title: Lecturer

Starting Date: Will vary as needs arise

Length of Employment: One semester or one academic year. Renewable, contingent upon review, need and funding.

Salary: Approximately $3750 - $6000 per course based on teaching experience, educational level, and size and level of the course.

Duties: Responsibilities include planning and organization of the course, instruction throughout the semester (3 in-class hours per week for Religious Studies courses and 3 and/or 5 in-class hours per week for Hebrew courses), grading, keeping of office hours, and submission of all relevant course records. Lecturers of graduate courses may assume limited advising duties or assist with thesis as arranged with the chair.

Required Qualifications: For REL courses: MA in Religious Studies or equivalent area, College teaching experience, evidence of teaching competence (e.g., course evaluations; supervisor ratings). Lecturers of graduate courses must also possess the terminal degree.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience teaching the course of interest.
