Site:  HI, Hawaii County

Disaster Type(s):  Severe Storms and Flooding

Declaration Date:  November 11, 2000

Incident Period:  October 28 to November 2, 2000

Summary of Disaster:

According to the emergency manager of Hawaii County, “We had 452 residences which sustained damages. We had 18 agricultural reports of damage, 31 businesses and 3 churches. This is atypical of the amount of rainfall we general receive. We receive a lot of rainfall specifically in the areas that were affected, on a regular basis, but in this case we had more than 24 inches in 24 hours, which is almost 3 feet in a 24-hour period.  So, this was pretty significant.” He also noted in the research interview that the storm impacted Hawaii County with over $11 million in damage.  The emergency manager stated, “The largest percentage of damage was to chimneys, septic drain-fields, broken windows, and exterior facades of buildings.”
