Spring Move-Out
As we near the end of the semester, you might be noticing that you have collected more "stuff" in your
dorm room,
apartment, or
office than you ever thought possible. If you don't plan on taking it all with you, don't just throw it all away. Here are a few tips to help you
REDUCE your move-out waste.
On-Campus Residents
Small items can be donated to local organizations by placing them in the donation bin located in your Residence Hall or Scholarship Hall lobby. Donations bins are located in the Bird's Nest at Jayhawker Towers, and in the laundry room at Stouffer Place.
Items Accepted:
Clean clothing
Clean bedding
Small working appliances
Pots, pans, dishes, etc. (please box or wrap any breakable items)
Other reusable household items
Non-perishable food (unopened items only)
This does not include:
Stained or torn clothing or bedding
Broken appliances or dishes
Open containers of food
Condiment packs
Breakable items that are not boxed or wrapped
If you have large good condition items to donate, like couches or futons, lease contact KU Recycling at 864-2855 to schedule a pick-up. If you are unable to donate the item or it has reached the end of its useful life, make sure you take large items to designated drop sites outside of your Residence Hall - Help those who are helping you!
REUSE pens, pencils, binders, and backpacks. If you have notebooks that have some good blank pages in them, reuse those for next semester. For paper that you only used one side to write on, make a stratch paper notepad. Simply cut the paper into fourths and staple them all together.
RECYCLE what you can! A lot of that "trash" you throw out at the end of the year can be recycled right in the lobby of your dorm or in one of the outdoor recycling bins at your apartment complex. A quick sort can keep your paper, plastic, and aluminum out of the landfill when it comes time to move out. Check out our
recycling guide to find out what's recyclable.
Off-Campus Residents
Donate unwanted items to a local thrift store, service organization, or used furniture store. Some organizations may provide a pick-up if you can't move it on your own. Visit
