Job Descriptions

STUDENT INTERN

This is a non-paid position that can be suited to each individual appointment according the individual's academic requirements. The Intern can be assigned to any/all of the following areas: Intramural Sports, Fitness, Sport Clubs, Outdoor Pursuits, Facilities, or Administration. The Director of Recreation Services or designee will supervise this position.

KU FIT GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTOR

Responsible for teaching various types of fitness classes within the KU FIT Program. An Instructor will possibly work morning, afternoon and evening hours Monday-Friday and / or various weekends. An Instructor must be certified in CPR or become certified within first four weeks after being appointed. All instructors must complete the in-house group fitness instructor training program or already hold a national certification in order to audition. Upon hire, KU Fit Group Fitness Instructors must obtain a national certification within one year of hire. Instructors must demonstrate a working knowledge of aerobics instruction, fitness safety at all times.

PERSONAL TRAINER

Responsible for leading participants through a safe and effective workout prescribed by the trainer. It is the responsibility of the trainer to recruit his or her own participants. The trainer will keep a schedule of times available to train participants in the morning, evenings, and/or weekends. A personal training log must be filled out completely for each training session by the trainer and kept in the participant's folder. Trainers must be certified in CPR or becomes certified within the first four weeks of employment. In addition, prior experience is required and certification is preferred. Trainers must demonstrate a working knowledge of flexibility, cardiovascular and resistance training instruction, safety/spotting, fitness testing, and general nutrition.

OFFICE SPECIALIST

An office specialist is integral in assisting KU Recreation Services with membership and guest services and office operations. Strong customer service is expected of each office specialist. All administrative specialists are expected to maintain current CPR/AED certification.

FITNESS ASSESSMENT INSTRUCTOR

Assist Program Director in programming and administration of the Fit4U program. Fit4U is a fitness assessment and personal fitness program. Fitness Assessment Instructor will work daytime and evening hours Monday- Friday, with some various weekend hours. Fitness Assessment Instructor must be certified in CPR or become certified within four weeks after being appointed. Extensive knowledge of health, fitness, computers, cardiovascular and strength equipment and fitness assessments.

INTRAMURAL OFFICIAL

Responsible for effectively officiating intramural sports contests and the general safety of the participants. Must attend Officials' meeting and clinic(s). Must be knowledgeable in general Intramural policies and procedures. An Official will work mainly afternoon / evening hours Monday-Friday, various weekend hours, with possible early morning hours.

INTRAMURAL SCOREKEEPER

Responsible for recording scores on the scoresheet / scoreboard and keeping game time during team sports. Must attend Officials' meetings and clinic(s). Must be knowledgeable in general Intramural policies and procedures. A Scorekeeper will work mainly afternoon / evening hours Monday-Friday, various weekend hours, with possible early morning hours Monday-Sunday.

CRT (Cardio/Resistance Training) SPECIALIST

Responsible for the daily operations of the Cardiovascular/Resistance Training areas; weekday and weekend hours including early morning, afternoon evenings and/or late evenings. An assistant must be certified in CPR/AED or become certified within four weeks after being appointed.

OUTDOOR PURSUITS SPECIALIST (ROUTE SETTER)

Individuals with intermediate to advanced rock climbing capabilities and experience in wall maintenance and route setting. In consultation with the Program Manger and/or Program Director, Route Setters will set routes on the Rock and Bouldering Walls.

FACILITY ASSISTANT (Student Recreaftion Fitness Center)

A facility assistant can work in one or more of the three responsibility areas within the SRFC during a given shift. In each area, an assistant shall enforce and implement policies and procedures or complete particular responsibilities so that the University population has the opportunity to participate in desired recreational programs, facilities, and services. Assistants are expected to work during the following periods: Fall and Spring Semester; and fall, winter, and spring breaks. The Summer Semester is optional and is covered by those who are available to work. They will also work Monday-Sunday with early morning hours (5:15am), morning, afternoon, evening, and late night hours (closing at midnight). Assistants are expected to work weekend hours on a regular basis. Each assistant must be certified in CPR/AED or become certified within one month after being appointed. of appointment. The three responsibility areas an assistant can work are: Welcome Center; Equipment Check-Out; Gym Monit.

MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT

(SRFC, Shenk Field Complex & Adams Campus)
Maintenance & cleaning of various facilities housed within KU Recreation Services (Student Recreation Fitness Center, Shenk Field Complex, Adams Campus and Stewart Ave. Property). In addition, duties will include maintenance and set-up of various pieces of sport equipment. Must have a current/valid driver's license. Assistants are expected to work during the following periods: Fall& clean for our participants.

OUTDOOR PURSUITS/ROCK CLIMBING ASSISTANT

Responsible for on-site supervision and administration of the rock climbing room and rock climbing equipment. Supervision will include multiple activities that can occur simultaneously. An Assistant will work mainly evening and afternoon hours Monday-Friday, various weekend hours, with possible early morning hours Monday-Sunday. An Assistant must be certified in CPR or become certified within two weeks after being appointed.

OUTDOOR PURSUITS/RENTAL ASSISTANT

Responsible for the daily operations of the Outdoor Pursuits Rental Center; weekday and weekend hours including morning, afternoon, and/or evening ; enforcing policies and procedures; instruction on use of and rental of outdoor equipment; managing a computerized inventory and cash draw software package. An Assistant must be certified in CPR or become certified within two weeks after being appointed.

SPORT CLUB ASSISTANT

Responsible for on-site supervision and administration of the various sport club activities. Supervision will include multiple activities that can occur simultaneously. A Manager will work mainly evening hours Monday-Friday, various weekend hours, with possible early morning hours Monday-Sunday. A Manager must be certified in CPR or become certified within two weeks after being appointed.

INTRAMURAL SPORTS SUPERVISOR

Responsible for on-site supervision and administration of the various intramural activities. Supervision will include multiple activities that can occur simultaneously. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of team sport and individual / dual activities. Experience as an official or scorekeeper at KU or similar situation is preferred, but not required. A Supervisor will work mainly afternoon / evening hours Monday-Friday, various weekend hours, with possible early morning hours. A Supervisor must be certified in CPR or become certified within two weeks after being appointed. Must have a valid driver's license to operate a state-owned vehicle. Must be present at Supervisor staff meetings.

FACILITIES SUPERVISOR

(SRFC, Shenk Field Complex, Robinson Center, and Special Events)
A Facilities Supervisor is responsible for on-site supervision and administration of all Recreation Services facilities. Supervision will include multiple activities that can occur simultaneously. A Facilities Supervisor works in collaboration with Facility Assistants, Facilities Program(s), Associate Director-Facilities, Assistant Director-Facilities, and all other program director within KU Recreation Services. Their Director Supervisor is the Associate Director of Facilities. A Facilities Supervisor assists in providing the University population with a safe, efficient, and enjoyable recreational facilities during their hours.

CHALLENGE COURSE (FACILITATOR) SUPERVISOR

Challenge Course Supervisor is responsible for on-site supervision and administration of various challenge course activities. Supervisor must be computer literate. Supervisor must be certified in CPR and AED or become certified within two weeks after being appointed. Course Supervisor is responsible for having equipment ready for all leadership and challenge course related functions. Supervision will include multiple groups, and activities that could occur simultaneously at the onsite facility. Other responsibilities will include working at the SRFC climbing wall for activities or events. As a challenge course Supervisor the employee will facilitate teambuilding and outdoor education programs. The challenge course Supervisor will work to deliver a safe and high quality program for various groups, including any responsibility deemed necessary to insure that the participants will have a quality and exciting experience. Challenge Course Supervisor must have sound judgment, excellent communication, public relations, and problem solving skills. Supervisor must be able to work with the wide range of people who attended challenge course programs for various reasons and are able to comfortably work within a university setting. Supervisor must be flexible in programming and must be willing to adjust program activities based needs/skill level of the participants/groups. The Supervisor will also be responsible for programming in all areas pertaining to facilitation of climbs, teambuilding and challenge course elements, and any other responsibilities deemed necessary in assuring that the participants are provided with a quality experience. Supervisor must be a self motivated individual who is willing to work with various individuals/ groups in weather conditions such as heat, cold, and other extreme elements. Supervisor must be willing to work various hours including early morning, late evenings, weekends, and weekdays.

OUTDOOR PURSUITS PROGRAM MANAGER

Assist Program Director in programming for and administration of Outdoor Pursuits Program. Program Manager must be computer literate. Program Manager will work mainly afternoon hours Monday-Friday, with some morning and evening, and various weekend hours. Program Manager must be certified in CPR or become certified within two weeks after being appointed. Involvement in a national recreation professional organization is encouraged.

INTRAMURAL SPORTS PROGRAM MANAGER

Assist Intramural Sports Director in programming for and administration of the Intramural Sports Program. Program Manager will work mainly afternoon hours Monday-Friday, with some evening, and various weekend hours and must be computer literate. Program manager must be certified in CPR or become certified within two weeks after being appointed. Involvement with national recreation or similar organizations encouraged but not required. Must have a valid driver's license to operate state-owned vehicles. Must be present at Supervisor staff meetings.

MARKETING PROGRAM MANAGER

Assist Program Director in programming for and administration of Recreation Services advertising and marketing. Program manager will work daytime office hours Monday-Friday. Extensive knowledge of computers and promotions required. Journalism, business, marketing major or equivalent preferred.

PERSONAL TRAINING/FITNESS ASSESSMENT (FIT4U) PROGRAM MANAGER

Assist the program director in programming and administration of the personal training and fitness assessment program. Program manager will work daytime, afternoon, evenings and various weekend hours. Program Manager must be certified in CPR or become certified within four weeks after being appointed. Extensive knowledge of health, fitness, exercise prescription in areas such as flexibility, cardiovascular and resistance training, safety/spotting, fitness testing and general nutrition. Prior Personal training experience is preferred.

SPORT CLUBS PROGRAM MANAGER

Assist program Director in programming for and administration of the Sport Club Program. Program Manager must be computer literate. Program Manager will work mainly afternoon hours Monday-Friday, with some evening, and various weekend hours. Program Manager must be certified in CPR or become certified within two weeks after being appointed. Involvement in a national recreation professional organization is encouraged.

TECHNOLOGY CONSULTANT/ WEB MASTER

Assist Program Director with computer, web and technology activities. Consultant will work mainly mid-morning and/or afternoon hours Monday-Friday, with some evening and various weekend hours. Prior and extensive knowledge of upkeep of hardware and software for P.C. and Macintosh computers and systems is essential. Consultant must have knowledge and experience working and maintaining Windows 2000 & XP, Excel, Word, Access, Power Point, Quark, PageMaker, Adobe, Dream Weaver. Consultant must be organized and have the ability to be self-motivated and self-directed.

ACCOUNTING ASSISTANT

The assistant must be a self starter, detailed oriented, able to follow instructions and work independently, experience in working in an office setting, enrolled in at least 6 hours for fall semester. Assistant must have computer experience with Excel & Word and be available to work 10-12 hours/week from 8am-5pm Monday-Fridays in 2 hour increments.

SPECIAL EVENT MONITOR

A special event monitor is responsible for providing on-site assistance for special events sponsored by KU Recreation Services at the KU Student Recreation Fitness Center, Robinson Center, Shenk Outdoor Complex and/or other designated location. This position requires flexible working hours that will include mornings, evenings and weekends. Strong customer service and promoting a positive image for KU Recreation Services is expected of each special event monitor. Special event monitors must be able to work independently and to take initiative. Moreover, the ability to work with participants of diverse backgrounds is essential. Special Event Monitors report directly to the Assistant Director-Facilities/Membership Services and/or the Associate Director-Sport Programs. All Special Event Monitors are expected to maintain current CPR/AED certification.
