About the Human Subject Committee of Lawrence (HSCL)

The Human Subjects Committee - Lawrence Campus (HSCL) protects those who volunteer to be participants in research studies. If you plan to use human participants in your research, you are required to receive permission from HSCL before the project begins. The federal government recognizes HSCL as KU's Institutional Review Board, or IRB. Research institutions are required to have an IRB before they may receive federal funding for behavioral and biomedical research.

HSCL's primary mission is to protect research participants' rights and privacy. In addition, it protects investigators from legal and ethical missteps and safeguards them from the repercussions of such missteps.

Message from the Coordinator

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

As you may have noticed, the last 6 months has been quite tumultuous for the Human Subjects Committee office.  Long time HSCL staff members have moved on to other projects and positions. To some I'm sure it seems like the only constant here is change, as you revise the HSCL contact information on your consent forms again and again.

I plan to use this transition as an opportunity to make changes that are constructive and help make our office more efficient.  We may experiment and try new things, or borrow other university's best practices in order to find a procedure that works better – while it may be a little clichéd, the goal for the HSCL office is to work smarter, not harder.  I hope you will bear with us while we learn, change, and adapt.

You may have already noticed some changes that we have put into effect, like electronic approval letters.  Changes like this save time, money and effort for our office and yours.  Also, if you are reading this, you have probably noticed the HSCL website redesign and reorganization.  HSCL staff put a lot of thought into creating a more user-friendly and streamlined website – let us know how we did!

We have many more new ideas in the works, like a monthly newsletter to help keep our HSCL researchers notified of new and upcoming changes and more educational opportunities for PIs.

HSCL recently added new staff members (a full time Assistant Coordinator and a part time Associate Coordinator) to the office.  As we begin to chart our way forward with a new staff and new ideas I hope that the human subjects research community will work with us to make changes that benefit us all.

Please remember to check back to this space for the latest news and updates from HSCL!

At your service,

Stephanie Dyson Elms
HSCL Coordinator
