Awards/Recognition

(July 2008) Chuck Spellman (Class of 1958—Osawatomie High School) was honored as the “Outstanding Alumnus of the Year” for his career advocating for and assisting disabled persons throughout the state. The following is taken from the May 28, 2008 edition of the Osawatomie Graphic:

“Spellman’s list of accomplishments surprised many in the audience who were unaware of their fellow alumnus’s accomplishments.  Spellman established the first Kansas public school program to serve students with severe disabilities and the first supported-work program in the state for people with disabilities.  Among his other accomplishments are helping develop the program now called Assistive Technology for Kansans, which helps disabled people live and work as independently as possible through the use of assistive devices, and creating the Kansas Assistive Technology Cooperative, which provide low-interest loans for purchase of assistive technology for disabled individuals. Spellman retired in June 2007 as senior scientist emeritus at the University of Kansas.”(by Osawatomie Graphic, May 28, 2008)
