Office of Study Abroad Scholarships for KU Students

OSA scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Scholarship applicants must have applied to a study abroad program through the KU Office of Study Abroad. Applicants must be degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate students at KU with the following GPA requirements:

Semester/Academic Year Scholarships:
Undergraduates: minimum 3.0 cumulative in KU coursework
Graduates: minimum 3.5 cumulative in KU coursework

Summer, Winter Break and Spring Break Scholarships:
Undergraduates: minimum 3.25 cumulative in KU coursework
Graduates: minimum 3.5 cumulative in KU coursework

Scholarship Application Deadlines

March 1: Summer, Fall and Academic Year Programs
October 1: Winter Break, Spring, and Spring Break Programs

National and Regional Scholarships

The following national scholarships are administered by on-campus representatives. For more information and application assistance, please contact the appropriate representative.

Fulbright Scholarships and Graduate Direct Exchange Grants

Fulbright Scholarships and Graduate Direct Exchange Grants are available to students who hold a bachelor's degree in hand by the beginning of the grant program, have a good to excellent GPA, and reasonable proficiency in the language of the host country. Boren Awards for Undergraduate International Study

Boren Scholarships provide U.S. undergraduate students funding up to $10,000 for a semester or $20,000 for a year to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.  In exchange for Boren Award funding, scholarship recipients commit to seek work in the Federal Government in a position with national security responsibilities within three years after graduation. The KU campus application deadline is in early December for the following academic year.  KU students interested in applying should contact Justine Hamilton in the Office of Study Abroad for more detailed information.  For program information and to start an application, visit www.borenawards.org.

The following scholarships have special applicant eligibility. Please read carefully to make sure you are a qualified applicant.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students to pursue semester or academic-year long study abroad opportunities. To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application. For more information and the online application, visit the Gilman Program website at www.iie.org/gilman.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi awards grants in the amount of $1,000 to undergraduates with a minimum GPA of 3.5 to study abroad. Information and applications are available online at www.phikappaphi.org.

James B. Pearson Fellowships

The James B. Pearson Fellowships for Graduate Studies Abroad provide stipends to Kansas graduate students to help underwrite academic efforts that require study abroad. The average stipend provided is $2,400. Applicants must have been residents of Kansas for a minimum of five years, must be accepted to a graduate program at an accredited Kansas college or university, and must be pursuing, or planning to pursue, a program of study preferably related to foreign affairs.
