The Survey Routine*

Schumaker, J., Deshler, D., & McKnight, P. (1989). The Survey Routine
Lawrence, KS: University of Kansas.

The Survey Routine is a package of instructional methods that teachers can use to help a diverse group of students prepare to read a passage and learn the key content in that passage. As part of the routine, a visual device, called the TRIMS Learning Sheet, is co-constructed with students. During this co-constructive activity, teachers follow a set of Linking Steps, which are embedded within an instructional sequence called the Cue-Do-Review Sequence. The purpose of the Cue-Do-Review Sequence is threefold: to get students ready to survey the reading passage, to co-construct a TRIMS Learning Sheet with students, and to check students' understanding of the information that has been surveyed. Thus, successful use of the Survey Routine is based on three critical components: the TRIMS Learning Sheet, the Linking Steps, and the Cue-Do-Review Sequence.

The TRIMS Learning Sheet
This instructional tool is a two-dimensional organizer that allows students to record key information about a reading passage. The Learning Sheet, or worksheet, is used to draw student attention to the critical parts of the reading passage and the most important information in that passage. A draft of this worksheet, the Learning Sheet, is created by the teacher prior to class and is used as a guide during class. After the final version of the Learning Sheet has been co-constructed by the students and the teacher in class, students can use it as a study guide as they read the passage and study its contents.

The Linking Steps
These steps guide the teacher during the in-class interactive creation of the TRIMS Learning Sheet. Although the teacher prepares a draft of the Learning Sheet in advance of the lesson, the final version is co-constructed with the students during class by following the Linking Steps. Students are asked to participate in this process for the purpose of enhancing their understanding of the upcoming reading assignment and the information to be learned from the passage.

The Cue-Do-Review Sequence
The Cue-Do-Review Sequence comprises three instructional phases. In the first phase, "Cue," the teacher cues students that the routines will be used and tells them what they need to do. In the "Do" Phase, the Linking Steps are used to construct the TRIMS Learning Sheet. Finally, in the "Review" Phase, students' understanding of both the reading passage and the process used to survey the reading passage is checked and reinforced.

*Training for The Survey Routine is required and is available across the U.S. through a network of more than 1,000 certified trainers. To learn more about training, contact the Kansas University - Center for Research on Learning web site, www.ku-crl.org.
