Sample Situations:

  • A staff member or student is unclear about the way in which a policy is being applied - and wants assistance in understanding and/or responding to it.

  • A student thinks that individual circumstances were not sufficiently considered in a decision by a university administrator or instructor.

  • A department chairperson is aware of conflict and occasional hostility between staff members - sometimes coming out in meetings - and would like better options in working with it.

  • A faculty member has encountered particularly troublesome experiences with one or more students and would like to better understand how the situation might be handled.

  • A student who had "peer mediation" experience in high school desires more instruction and opportunities to use mediation skills at K.U.

  • A student, faculty, or staff person asked to be a "conciliator" between disputants is willing to spend some time in learning about the nature of conflict and some effective ways of working with it.

  • A person considering use of a university grievance procedure would first like to attempt informal mediation.
