Law professor lauded for leadership in international education

John Head, professor of law at the University of Kansas, is one of three winners of the 2008 Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award, sponsored by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. International Programs nonimated Head for the award.

Head joins David Allen of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Robert Reinstein of Temple University as a recipient of the Malone award, which honors those who further international education in public higher education. The awards were established in 2000.

“This year’s Malone award recipients have worked tirelessly to promote international education and development,” said Peter McPherson, president of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. “Their focus on international problems speaks well of America’s highly regarded university system and the willingness of our scholars to promote higher education across the globe.”

Head has been closely involved in the study abroad programs at KU and was the first law school faculty member to teach in the university’s Istanbul program. He also helped develop KU’s summer law program at the University of Limerick in Ireland and the law school’s teaching exchange program with Anahuac University in Xalapa, Mexico. He is the president of Phi Beta Delta, an honor society that recognizes achievement in international education.

Head also has helped create cooperative teaching arrangements with institutions in Hong Kong, South Korea and New Zealand; taught in KU’s summer law program in Cambridge, England; and assisted in building a strong Overseas Visiting Scholars Program that attracts advanced students and young academics from all over the world to KU’s School of Law. He coaches two of KU’s international law moot court teams and co-sponsors the International Law Society.

Head will receive the award during a summer ceremony in Portsmouth, N.H.
