About the Global Awareness Program
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible to join the Global Awareness Program?
All undergraduates regardless of their major are eligible to participate in GAP.
How do I participate?
Register online by filling in a few pieces of information about yourself. There is no application process - all students are welcome to work towards completing GAP certification. Register now
and then work towards completing your GAP portfolio.
What do I do after registering?
Review the program components and decide which 2 out of the 3 (or all 3!) you want to work on completing. Then document everything in the GAP portfolio and turn in your portfolio to the GAP Coordinator to complete certification.
What courses count for GAP?
A list of GAP approved courses is available on our website. A student must have three international content courses from three different departments. If they are in a professional school, two of the courses may be from the same department. (Students must also take two semesters of a foreign language. All modern foreign languages count.)
Do foreign language classes count as part of the 3 classes required to fulfill component B?
In a word, no. To fulfill component B (Academic Component), you need to have two semesters of a foreign language PLUS three other courses with international content. Fulfillment of BOTH language instruction courses (foreign language) and international content courses is required to complete the academic component.
What if a course is international and it is not listed?
Contact the GAP Coordinator and the course content will be reviewed for eligibility.
How do I make sure that the activities I attend under component C will count for GAP credit?
Suggested GAP approved activities are all eligible for GAP credit. Other activities not listed may count if their theme is international. When in doubt whether an activity will count, contact the GAP Coordinator through email, call 864-7265, stop by during office hours (8am - 5pm) or make an appointment at a time that is convenient for you.
How do I record my co-curricular activities?
Download and print a GAP Portfolio and record activities in section C under the appropriate subheadings.
Do I need a signature after I attend an event?
If you are able to obtain a signature, we recommend that you do. Some attendances require a signature and others do not. Read instructions in the GAP portfolio for details.
Is a reflection summary required for each event?
Yes. For each attendance write a summary to describe the event and outline why the event was of international value to you. What did you learn that is new and of international value?
How long are the summaries for each event?
Summaries should be one page long if you have no signature and a half-page long if you have a signature. Reflection summaries must be typed and can be double-spaced. Longer reflections are also welcome if you so choose.
How often do I need to turn in the summaries?
Turn in all of your summaries together after you have accumulated 60 GAP credits. Your summaries should be attached to your completed portfolio.
Where do I turn in the portfolio?
Turn in your portfolio to the GAP Office in International Programs. We are located in Strong Hall, Room 300. Address your portfolio to the GAP Coordinator and remember to sign and date, include your name and KU ID and attach a current copy of your ARTS form.
