Describe a typical course schedule for my first year here at KU.
Typically, you will take approximately 15 hours per semester as a graduate and 16 hours per semester as an undergraduate. You may view the suggested course sequence available in the MEMT office or download one online.
What special labs, studios, computer facilities, etc., are available for me?
There is a computer lab available (when not reserved for a class) exclusively to MEMT students in the MEMT office for email and general computing. No printing is available. In addition, all MEMT classrooms are equipped with computers, projectors, audio equipment and Clavinova pianos. Practice rooms are also available on the 5th Floor of Murphy Hall for all students for practice purposes. The Music and Dance Library has an extensive collection of books, journals, readings and print music. The MEMT suite houses music therapy clinic space and flexible research spaces.
What is the Music Therapy faculty like at KU?
The Music Therapy faculty at KU is comprised of individuals with a variety of clinical expertise, ranging from experience working with early intervention, developmental disabilities, Alzheimer's, physical rehabilitation, hospice, behavioral/emotional disorders to name a few. Where do music therapists typically work?
Music therapists' work in a variety of locations, including but not limited to: hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, school districts, hospice care, and private practice. How much is a music therapist typically paid?
A music therapist's salary will vary due to a variety of factors, including: the geographical location of employment, the nature of the job, and the level of experience that an individual brings to employment (i.e. previous music therapy experience, bachelor/masters). Will I get any actual music therapy experience during my degree program?
Yes. A portion of the requirements for the Music Therapy degree includes four practicum experiences under the direction of a supervisor, in which the student provides music therapy services for a variety of clients in various settings. Following the completion of all coursework, an individual must complete a six-month internship at an approved site.
How and when will I be advised? Do I get to choose my advisor?
Advising takes place about two months into the semester. Before advising, you will set an appointment with your advisor. At the time of your acceptance into the music education program, an advisor is assigned to you. However, you can change your advisor with the consent of the professors involved.
What scholarship assistance is available and how do I apply?
After completion of the internship, an individual is eligible to take the music therapy board certification exam in order to practice as an entry level professional music therapist. More information on the board certification exam can be found on the CBMT website.
I don't have an undergraduate degree in Music Therapy. Can I get my master's in Music Therapy regardless?
Yes. MEMT offers a Music Therapy equivalency program, designed for individuals that do not have an undergraduate degree in Music Therapy. Most students work on the graduate equivalency program and the master's degree simultaneously. A curriculum sheet for the Graduate Equivalency program can be found online or a copy can be picked up in the MEMT office.
How long will it take me to complete my degree?
The time span for completion of the degree will vary depending upon the number of hours you choose to take each semester, whether or not you choose to take summer school classes, and whether or not you decide to work during your degree program, etc.
Typically, the Music Therapy undergraduate degree takes four years followed by an internship. The master's degree generally takes two to three years, and the doctorate an additional three years.
