CHORAL PEDAGOGY TRACK MME: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW DO I APPLY?
Follow the application procedures detailed on the "Applying to KU" link to the left and on the MEMT web site. Application forms may be downloaded there.
WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR ADMISSION?
Check the MEMT web site for full, complete details. In general, students must have an undergraduate degree in music or music
education with a 3.0 GPA. Students must submit: Official Transcripts, Scores on the GRE (Graduate Record Examination), Recommendations, and a
Video Tape that demonstrates performance proficiency on your major instrument. A student may be admitted initially as a non-degree seeking graduate
student. Such admission requires an undergraduate degree with a 3.0 GPA and official transcripts. Courses taken during one term as a non-degree
seeking graduate student may be used for degree requirements following full application and regular admission to the graduate school.
IS TRANSFER CREDIT ACCEPTED?
Yes, up to 6 hours, if in accord with the KU Policy on transfer credit and subject to advisor approval. See the Transfer Credit link for complete details.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE THESIS AND NON-THESIS OPTIONS?
There are two major sets of differences between the two options. One difference, obviously, is that the thesis option requires completion
of a thesis that employs historical, philosophical, quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research methodologies. The thesis option degree requires a total of
30 hours, including 3-5 hours of master's thesis advisement. The non-thesis option requires 33 hours of approved coursework, a project (3 hours), and a
comprehensive examination (1 hr). The other difference is that the thesis option is preferred, often required, for those students
who contemplate doctoral study. The non-thesis option degree is typically a terminal graduate degree.
HOW CAN I FINISH ALL REQUIREMENTS IN 3 YEARS?
Students may take up to 8 credit hours each summer (24 credit hours total for 3 summer terms). In the summer, students may take 3-6 hours
in the three-week session, and 1-2 hours in the one week session. In addition, students may earn up to 3 hours credit
for participation in professional development conferences such as those sponsored by MENC and ACDA, earning one hour of credit per conference. Students may also take 3-6 hours credit during
per regular academic year, either in on campus evening classes, as offered; in KU online or KU distance education courses, as offered; and/or in individual study or
individual research. Furthermore, up to 6 hours of approved transfer credit may be counted toward the degree. Students are encouraged as well
to take advantage of summer courses offered by the Voice Care Network and/or National Center for Voice and Speech.
AM I LIMITED TO TAKING ONLY CHORAL PEDAGOGY TRACK COURSES?
No. Students may take any appropriate KU graduate course, with advisor approval and keeping in mind MME course distribution
requirements. Your program of studies should make sense overall in terms of your professional and educational goals.
CAN I TAKE ONE OR MORE CHORAL PEDAGOGY COURSES AS A NON-DEGREE SEEKING GRADUATE STUDENT?
Yes. Refer to graduate school policies for details.
WHAT IS THE TIME LIMIT FOR FINISHING THE DEGREE?
All requirements must be completed within 7 years of taking your first course as a fully admitted master's degree student.
CAN I GAIN TEACHER CERTIFICATION THROUGH THIS DEGREE?
All KU MME degree programs permit students to pursue teacher certification while simultaneously completing the degree, if desired. However,
doing so could increase considerably the time spent. Students, moreover, would not be able to complete many courses needed for
certification during the summer; such courses are typically scheduled during the fall and spring semesters. The choral pedagogy master's
degree track is designed primarily for those who already hold basic certification, or for those who do not need teacher certification
to pursue their professional or academic goals.
WILL THE CHORAL PEDAGOGY TRACK M.M.E. POSITION ME TO APPLY FOR Ph.D. OR DMA STUDIES?
Absolutely. Students contemplating the Ph.D. should pursue the thesis option and the many opportunities to hone research skills
through choral pedagogy track courses. Students contemplating the DMA in choral conducting may elect some additional studies in
conducting and choral literature, if desired.
