Science at a Time of National Emergency
June 12-14, 2002

The Merrill Center has established a regional retreat series: The Research Mission of Public Universities.
"Science at a Time of National Emergency" was the topic in 2002.
Participating universities were: University of Kansas, Kansas State University, University of Nebraska and Iowa State University.

Participants discussed a number of ways that scientists can come to the aid of the country, while also noting the difficulties created by increased national security. Among these four Midwestern institutions, a number of complimentary strengths were identified in the areas of food safety and crisis management. The pages of the 2002 white paper show a frank examination of the issues, and reveal several possibilities for joint research on preventing and mitigating bioterrorism.

The 2002 White Paper is now available in print and online.
