In The Know is a public outreach project of the Merrill Advanced Studies Center -- available exclusively online at www.merrill.ku.edu. Articles and fact sheets for the general reader give accurate information about disabilities, aging, and human development. In the Know explains hot topics in science and policy as they emerge at Merrill conferences. It also taps into the wealth of knowledge at the Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies, a nationally-acclaimed research group at the University of Kansas. In The Know is an excellent source for research on mental retardation and communication disorders across the life span from infancy to old age. It is also a good way to keep up-to-date on policies that promote topflight research in academe. In The Know is divided into two sections: Science and Research Policy.
Science keeps you abreast of discoveries that are making a difference in people's lives. The mapping of the human genome has shown that advances in science are key to providing solutions. In The Know is a valuable primer on genetics, neuroscience and psychology if you want to keep informed about human development and disability. See our handy reference guide -- "Top Ten Things You Should Know" -- for specific information on children. See our multi-part "Science Features" for more in-depth reading on developmental disabilities. We also have a section devoted to issues in older age. "Get the Facts on Aging" puts you in touch with the latest research from KU's Gerontology Center.
