IN THE NEWS Talk of the Nation talks to Ann Turnbull Ann Turnbull distinguished professor and co-director of the Beach Center on Disability, was the special guest August 11 on the National Public Radio program “Talk of the Nation” to discuss the legacy of the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver. She discussed the impact of her son, J.T., on the Lawrence community and the importance of incremental change in the lives of people with disabilities. The program is available at NPR. National sites report recent discovery by Mabel Rice A recent discovery about specific candidate genes for Specific Language Impairment, conducted by a team of scientists led by Mabel Rice, was reported in more than 20 international science news websites in August, including Science Daily, United Press International and Medical News Today. The research points toward the likelihood of multiple genes contributing to language impairment, some of which also contribute to reading or speech impairment. Rice, who is the Fred and Virginia Merrill Distinguished Professor of Advanced Studies and director of LSI’s Center for Biobehavioral Neurosciences in Communication Disorders, said the findings are consistent with numerous reports documenting that language impairments and reading disability often co-exist. Ekerdt in U.S. News and World Report David Ekerdt’s research on the complexities of downsizing for older Americans was discussed in a story in the June 23 online edition of U.S. News and World Report. Ekerdt noted that disposing of cherished possessions brings up complicated emotions for people who must decide what to keep and what to discard or give away. “It's about people's stuff but it's really about their attitudes and values," he said. Ekerdt is director of LSI’s Gerontology Center and principal investigator for the Household Moves project. LSI featured in LJW special section Three LSI-affiliated scientists were featured in stories appearing in the Lawrence Journal World’s annual KU edition, published each year at the beginning of the fall semester. Rud and Ann Turnbull, co-directors of the Beach Center, were interviewed for an August 18 story about the intersection of their personal lives as the parents of the late J.T. Turnbull and their research interests and longtime advocacy efforts. Glen White, professor of applied behavioral science and director of the Research and Training Center on Independent Living, was featured in the same edition on his efforts to improve the lives of Peruvians with disabilities.
